Term
Erythrocytes
Definition
Name given to red blood cells
Term
Eyrthropoeisis
Definition
Production of red blood cells
Term
Erythroblasts
Definition
red blood cell precursors found in the bone marrow.
Term
Normoblasts
Definition
Another name for red blood cell precursors.
Term
Red Blood Cell production
Definition
controlled by erythropoietin. Occurs in the bone marrow, myeloid stem cells become erythroblasts, they then undergo morphological changes and mature into red blood cells. Approx. 3-5 days.
Term
Mature Red Blood Cells
Definition
In the bloodstream, 2-3 million on avg, live for approx 120 days, die in spleen and are ate by macrophages.
Term
6 Stages of RBC Development (CAP)
Definition
Pronormoblast
Basophilic Normoblast
Polychromatophilic Normoblast
Orthochromic Normoblaast

Prorubricyte
Rubricyte
Metarubricyte
Reticulocyte
Erythrocyte
Term
As a RBC matures...
Definition
Cell size decreases, cytoplasm changes from blue to pink, increases compared to cell size, nucleus decreases in size, disappears, changes from purplish-red to dark blue, nucleoli disappear, chromatine become coarse clumped and condensed, N/C ratio decreases.
Term
Pronormoblast (Rubriblast)
Definition
Cytoplasm has a deep rich blue color, 10-15um, scanty amount of cytoplasm, non-granular, nucleoli, round or slightly oval, stains less red, perinuclear HALO, in bone marrow.
Term
Basophilic Normoblast (Prorubricyte)
Definition
10-15um, N/C ratio: 6:1, Cytoplasm stains more deeply than pronormoblast, scanty and non granular, nucleoli, round or slightly oval, less red, perinuclear HALO, in bone marrow.
Term
Polychromatophilic Normoblast (Rubricyte)
Definition
first true appearance of Hgb, last stage of cell division, 10-12um, N/C ratio 4:1. murky grey cytoplasm, moderate amount, no nucleoli, condensed and clumped chromatin, wago wheel, deeper blue, in bone marrow.
Term
Orthrochromic Normoblast (Metarubricyte)
Definition
Last stage with nucleus, known as nucleated RBC, 8-10um, N/C ratio 1:2, pink-orange cytoplasm, moderate amount, small, pyknotic nucleous, coarse and clumped chromatin, mostly in bone marrow.
Term
REticulocyte (Polychromatic Erythrocyte)
Definition
8-8.5um, No N/C ratio, all cytoplasm, pink, slightly blue appearnace with stain, smal amounts of RNA appear as granules, irregular shape, not bioconcave, no nucleus, mostly in bone marrow.
Term
Erythrocyte (RBC)
Definition
6-8um, No N/C ratio, round bioconcave disk with distinct and smoth margins, salmon pink with a centrol pale area, in peripheral blood.
