Term
The Endopterygota
Definition
These insects undergo Holometabolous (complete) metamorphosis: the insect young are referred to as larvae; they are strikingly different from the adults and must undergo a period of massive morphological changes, usually occurring in a chrysalis or cocoon. These species are referred to as endopterygotes as their wings develop internally. (Endopterygota used to be an Infraclass in the Subclass Neoptera and although it has since been dissolved its morphological description remains true)
Term
The Exopterygota
Definition
These insects undergo Hemimetabolous (incomplete) metamorphosis: the insect young more or less resemble miniature adults (though wingless), and are referred to as nymphs. Nymphs will undergo a series of molts to become 1st, 2nd, 3rd (etc) instars before one final molt after which they emerge as an adult imago. These species are referred to as exopterygotes as their wings develop externally. (Exopterygota used to be an Infraclass in the Subclass Neoptera and although it has since been dissolved its morphological description remains true)
