One (Number 31) - Pollock

Definition

Abstract Expressionist

Lines that are usually made to create a picture, doesn’t happen in Pollock.

Line becomes color. Usually it is two opposing parts to create a painting, but here they come together, and the lines between the two are becoming blurred.

Clement Greenburg: Critic, wrote a book called Modernist Painting.

·      1. ALL ABOUT OPTICS, ALL ABOUT THE ART and painting, flat image. Everything is about vision, and looking and your eye interpretation. About flatness. Optical Plenum (Space that is completely filled with matter) Pictorial Moralities (Procedures that one goes through to create a picture, we are seeing procedure the person went through. About form and color. )

TJ Clark: Marxist historian.

·      2. ALL ABOUT FIGURES, surrealism and exploring the subconscious. Trying to cover up, and erasing figures, which are underneath the image. *Countered because there is nothing underneath. The whole thing becomes one image. Pure form of image making that is in the primitive time is what Pollock is trying to go back to. Hand prints, allusion to caveman paintings and is a form of figuration in that way. (Going back to the origins). If you look at them as a whole you see landscapes, nature

Robert Morris – artist (the process artists)

·      3. POLLOCK’S PROCESS Creating a different relationship between the artist and the work. Anti-form, it is about destroying form because of the way his body interacts with the work. (We became humans when we stood up, vision and sight became more important.) Gives into gravity, and gives into the animalistic aspect of our experience.
