RULE #1

One more Oxygen, add "per" to the front

of the root name:

Ex 1. MnO₄^-1 PERMANGANATE

Ex 2. ClO₄^-1   PERCHLORATE

RULE #2

One less Oxygen, change the ending to

"ite":

Ex 1. NO₂^-1 NITRITE

Ex 2. CO₂^-2  CARBONITE

Ex 3. SO₂^-2SULFITE

RULE #3

Two less Oxygens, keep change of "ite"

but add "hypo":

Ex 1. ClO^-1 HYPOCHLORITE

Ex 2. BrO^-1 HYPOBROMITE

Ex 3. NO^-1 HYPONITRITE
