Consists of 12 members (11 Airmen plus one mortician) specifically trained and equipped to handle S&R operations in a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) environment and with multiple commingled remains.

Composed of 11 military members from FSS appropriately trained, manned, and equipped to respond to mishaps involving search and rescue.

Mortuary Affairs Officer or alternate

Recovery team goes to each find, tags, plots location on map or grid, and photographs each find.

-Mark each stake with appropriate letter designation (R, P, E)

-Plot location using GPS or on a map/grid

-Use 3 tags for each remains (stake, remains, pouch)

-Color photo of each remains showing the tag's R, P or E designation

-Include a close-up shot of remains depicting relationship to majority of wreckage

-Place remains carefully into HRP or plastic bag

Recovery mission # and Organization, Branch of Service, Date, Believed to Be (BTB) if appropriate on reverse side

Not to be removed from remains; left with the remains to preserve supportive identification evidence. Loose PE at site will be annotated on teh site map and placed in plastic bags secured with wire tie shipping tags. Never try to re-associate PE to remains in S&R process.

Remains must be refrigerated at a temperature of 38-40 degrees F or 3.3-4.4 degrees C. If refrigeration not readily available, pack bagged remains in ice or ice packs in insulated chests or in a transfer case. Ice should not be placed directly on the remains.
