Term

Adrenergic

Effects?

Definition
  1. Vasoconstriction à Increase BP, keeps blood at vital organsàalpha 1
  2. Cardiac Stimulation à Increase HR, stimulates heart to work, increases force of contraction
  3. Bronchodilation à Increase oxygen ventilation à Beta 2
  4. Glycogenolysis à breaks down glycogen from liver to glucose – diabetics must be carefully monitored
Term

Adrenergic

Clinical uses?

Definition

Anaphylaxis

Hypotension à shock

Nasal Congestion

Dilated Pupils à vision problems are cues to cardio problems

Relax Bronchi

Term

Adrenergic

Adverse Effects?

Definition

Hypertension

Tachycardia – expected affect

Reflex bradycardia à adverse reaction

Increase blood glucose

Necrosis with extravasation à tissue damage/death

Term

Antiadrenergic

Effects?

Definition

Cardiac Depression

Peripheral vasodilation

Some smooth muscle relaxation (GI, Bladder)

Bronchial constriction

Term

Antiadrenergic

Clinical uses?

Definition

Hypertension

Dsyrhythmias

Heart Failure – pump mechanism

Angina (relax of blood vessels)

Benign prostatic hypertrophy
Term

Antiadrenergic

Adverse Effects?

Definition

Dysrhthmias

Heart Failure

Reflex tachycardia

Orthostatic hypotension – “1st dose syncope” – fainting

Term
Cholinergic
Effects?
Definition
  1. Nicotinic: skeletal muscle – contractions; enhanced transmission of impulses
  2. Muscarinic : Heart rate, blood vessels, BP – slows HR, vasodilation, BP changes
  3. Respiratory and GI secretions – increase resp. and GI secretions Pupils constrict
  4. Smooth muscle tone in GI tract, bladder, and bronchi – side effect = diarrhea
  5. GU and GI sphincters – relax
Term

Cholinergic

Clinical uses?

Definition

Diagnose and treat myasthenia gravis (MG) – can cause respiratory failure

Reverse neuromuscular blockade

Treat urinary retention

Relieve postoperative abdominal distention

Treat Alzheimer's disease (AD)
Term

Cholinergic

Adverse Effects?

Definition

Bronchospasm

Cardiac dysrhythmias,

Hypotension

GI distress

Sweating

Convulsions

Term

Anticholinergic

Effects?

Definition
  1. CNS –stimulation and then depression
  2. Decreased Muscle tone in GI tract, bladder, and bronchi
  3. Decrease in Respiratory and GI secretions
  4. Increased Urinary sphincter tone
  5. Increased Heart rat
  6. Pupil dilation
Term

Anticholinergic

Adverse effects?

Definition

Blurred vision, increase in IOP (intra ocular pressure) à don’t give to pt’s with glaucoma

Constipation

Dry mouth

Pee à Urinary retention

Tachycardia – increased HR

 BCDPT

Term

Anticholinergic

Effects?

Definition

CNS –stimulation and then depression

Muscle tone in GI tract, bladder, and bronchi – decreased

Urinary sphincter tone –increased

Heart rate -increased

Respiratory and GI secretions – decreased

Pupils –dilation

Term

Anticholinergic

Clinical uses?

Definition

Asthma – opens airways, decreased secretions (controversial use)

Overactive bladder

Treat or prevent bradycardia , heart block

Decrease resp/gi secretions in surgery

Treat peptic ulcer disease – decrease in GI secretions à acid, bile, enzymes help reduce trauma

Dilate pupil for exam, surgery – optometrist
