Soft Palate

Found on roof of mouth, near back. Unribbed.

Canine Tooth

Found on roof of mouth, near front. 2nd tooth; found behind incisor.

Pharynx

Hole on soft palate, roof of mouth. Just before (ocassionally underneath) epiglottis.

Epiglottis

Tube-like structure at base of tongue.

Function: Guards entrance of glottis; prevents food from going down larynx while eating and instead directs it to the esophagus.

Tongue

On lower jaw

Function: Manipulates food while chewing; primary taste organ.

Papillae

On tongue

Diaphragm

Below heart, above liver. Looks like it's a hat for the liver.

Liver

Beneath diapragm, center of torso, top of thoracic cavity.

Function: Detoxification, protein synthesis, production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. Plays a major role in metabolism. Necessary for survival.

Stomach

Underneath/next to liver; sack-like organ.

Function: Digestion

Small Intestine - Duedenum

Small tube connecting stomach to rest of intestines.

Function: Shortest part of intestine; chemical digestion takes place here.

Small Intestine - Ileum

Covers most of the abdominal cavity.

Function: Absorb vitamin B-12, bile salts, and products of digestion not absorbed by previous sections of the intestines.

Kidney

Sides of abdominal cavity, under membrane.

Function: Excrete wastes, re-absorb nutrients, secrete hormones, regulate blood pressure, maintain acid-base homeostasis.

Spleen

Thin organ between stomach, kidney, and colon.

Function: Filter red blood cells, store blood cells, create lymphocytes.

Gallbladder

Underneath liver, empty green-ish sack.

Function: Concentrates bile created by the liver, aids in digestion of lipids.

Pancreas

Found next to stomach

Function: Produce hormones (insulin!!!), secrete digestive enzymes into intestines.

Rectum

End of colon

Function: Temporary storage of feces, stimulate urge to defecate.
