Cards

Term
Name three causes of edema.
Definition
Thrombophlebitis, Lymphatic Dysplasia and Lymphatic Obstruction
Term
What is Thrombophlebitis?
Definition
swelling of a vein caused by a blood clot
Term
What is lymphatic dysplasia?
Definition
a congenital maldevelopment, interferes with function of the lymphatic system and causes effusion of chyle or lymph into the limbs and pleural or peritoneal cavity.
Term
What are blood vessels composed of?
Definition
Connective tissue (i.e., collagen & elastin), smooth muscle & endothelial tissue.
Term
How do vascular characteristics differ among different types of blood vessels?
Definition

aorta = predominantly elastic structure

Artery = Elastin and smooth muscle about equal. Less fibrous tissue

arterioles = more smooth muscle than elastin

precapillary sphincters = more smooth muscle than elastin.

Capillaries = devoid of collagen, smooth muscle and elastin, allowing the semi-porous capillary endothelium to predominate.

Venules = Fibrous tissue + endothelium

Veins and Vena Cava = Fibrous, smooth muscle and elastin all about equal
