The mediastinum. It allows the lungs to behave separately--one can collapse while the other does not.

Definition
Anastomoses are connections between bronchial and pulmonary capillaries. They function mainly during pathological conditions allowing blood flow to blocked areas of the lungs.

Definition
Approximately .2-.5 microns and it takes place almost instantaneously.
