Penetration site- Height of mucobuccal fold above the canine
Landmarks- Apex of the canine, canine fossa
Needle length- Short 25/27 gauge
Angle of insertion- needle 25 degrees medially- bevel towards bone
Penetration- Shallow depth, tip of needle
Amount- 0.9-1.2 ml
Term
Posterior Superior Alveolar
(PSA)
Definition
Field- Max. molars except mesiobuccal root of first molar. Buccal tissue to affected teeth
Penetration site- Height of mucobuccal fold above second molar
Landmarks- Mucobuccal fold, second molar, max. tuberosity, zygomatic process
Needle length- Short 25/27 gauge
Angle of insertion- 45 degrees medially to midsaggital plane, 45 degrees superior to occlusal plane
Penetration- 10-16 mm
Dose- 0.9-1.8 ml
Term
Middle Superior Alveolar
(MSA)
Definition
Field- Max. premolars and mesiobuccal root of first molar. Facial tissues to affected teeth
Penetration site- Height of mucobuccal fold above second premolar
Landmarks- Mucobuccal fold of second premolar, apex of second premolar
Needle length- Short 25/27 gauge
Angle of insertion- 20 degrees medially bevel toward bone
Penetration- Shallow 5-8 mm
Dose- 0.9-1.2 ml
Term
Greater Palatine
(GP)
Definition
Field- Palatal tissues of posterior teeth
Penetration site- In the anterior depression of the GP foramen, at junction of palatine bone and alveolar process above and lingual to second molar
Landmarks- Alveolar process and palatine bone. Anterior depression of GP foramen
Needle length- Extra short to short 30/27 gauge
Angle of insertion- From opposite side of mouth at right angle to target area bevel towards palate
Penetration- 4-6 mm
Dose- 0.4-0.6 ml
Term
Nasopalatine
(NP)
Definition
Field- Palatal to incisors and canines
Penetration site- Just lateral to incisive papilla at widest aspect
Landmarks- Incisive papilla
Needle length- Extra short to short 30/27 gauge
Angle of insertion- 45 degrees to anterior palate bevel towards palate
Penetration- 6-10 mm
Dose- Less than or equal to 4 ml
Term
Long Buccal
(LB)
Definition
Field- Buccal to molars soft tissues
Penetration site- mucous membrane distal and lateral to most posterior molar
Landmarks- Buccal aspect of ramus, external oblique ridge, buccal fold just distal and buccal to most posterior molar
Needle length- Short (when given alone) 25/27 gauge or Long (when following an IA)
Angle of insertion- Syringe parallel to occlusal plane, lateral to teeth, bevel towards bone
Penetration- Less than or equal to 4mm
Dose- 0.2-0.3 ml
Term
Inferior Alveolar
(IA)
Definition
Field- All teeth in quadrant, all periodontium, buccal mucosa premolars to midline, floor of mouth, and 1/2 tongue in quadrant
Penetration site- Medial to internal oblique ridge, lateral to pterygomandibular raphe, at or above height of coronoid notch
Landmarks- Pterygomandibular triangle and pterygomandibular raphe
Needle length- Long 25-27 gauge
Angle of insertion- 2/3 to 3/4 length of needle until contact with bone, bevel towards bone
Penetration- 2/3 to 3/4 length of needle
Dose- 1.5-1.8 ml
Term
Mental
(M)
Definition
Field- Pulpal limited to tooth at site of infiltration. Premolars to midline soft tissues
Penetration site- Mucobuccal fold at or just anterior to mental foramen
Landmarks- Mental foramen, apices of first or second premolars
Needle length- Short 25/27 gauge
Angle of insertion- 20 degrees to long axis of premolars. bevel towards bone
Penetration- 5-6 mm
Dose- 0.6 ml
Term
Infiltration
(Mandibular)
Definition
Field- At injection site (tooth and tissue)
Penetration site- Mucobuccal fold to tooth
Landmarks- Selected soft tissue, gingival, or apex of tooth
Needle length- Extra short or short 25/27/30 gauge
Angle of insertion- 20 degrees to long axis of tooth, directed toward apex of tooth, bevel toward bone
