Mechanisim of Action:    

Increases concentration of oxygen available at the

alveolar/capillary level.

Essential component of aerobic metabolism. 

Indications:                                   

Hypoxia

Dyspnea

Chest pain of myocardial origin

Respiratory failure/arrest.

Variety of conditions that result in hypoxemia. 

Contraindications:

  Dry mucous membranes, nose bleed, dry eyes

Precautions:                                    

Observe patients for changes in respiratory status.

Patients with COPD may have a decrease in hypoxic drive.

Do not use around potential ignition source.

Do not withhold oxygen from any patient in distress.
