  • Pneumonia Description:
Definition
  • Pneumonia is an infection of one or both lungs which is usually caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
  • After infected organisms travel to the lungs, they settle and grow within the alveoli and increase in number. Once this occurs, the alveoli get filled with pus and fluid while the body attempts to fight off the infection.
  • Over 3 million people in the U.S. develop the disease each year. Over half a million of these people are admitted to the hospital.
  • 5% of these individuals will die from Pneumonia
  • It is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S.

Definition
  • Inhalation of small droplets containing Pneumonia causing organisms.
  • These droplets get into the air when an individual coughs or sneezes.
  • Bacteria/Viruses of the mouth, throat & nose that travel to the lungs can lead to the formation of Pneumonia.  
  • This can happen in sleep during aspiration.
  • Weakened conditions increase susceptibility to Pneumonia.

  1. Chest x-ray
  2. Sputum samples-bacteria containing Pneumonia infected organism is examined under a microscope to identify which organism is causing the disease.
