Term
What is a kinetic chain?
Definition
System of interconnected links
Term
What is-Closed kinetic chain:
Definition

Predictable movement

Fixed to floor

-relativly low velocity, generates large force

-Ex:walking standing, running, jumping

Term
Open kinetic chain:
Definition

Not fixed to the ground.

Tend to produce high velocity movements

-Relativly low forces, generates high velocities

ex: kicking, throwing, running walking

Term
Concurrent Shift:
Definition

Applies to two joint musucles only becasue the muscle goes through concentric and eccentric lengthening all at the same time at different ends.

i.e. rectus femoris

-gives us a predictable pattern.

Term
Closed kinetic chain characteristcs:
Definition

↑ compressive forces
↑ joint congruency
↓ shear forces
↓ acceleration forces
Stimulation of proprioceptors
↑ dynamic stability

-Tendency for substitution of larger muscles rather than correct use of weaker muscle

Term
Open kinetic chain characteristics:
Definition

↑ acceleration forces
↓ resistance forces
↑ distraction and rotational forces
↑ deformation of joint and muscle mechanoreceptors
Concentric acceleration & eccentric deceleration forces
Promotion of functional activities

-Can be initiated prior to full weight bearing

Term
Benifits of Closed Kinetic Chain
Definition
Safer
Produce less stress to healing structures
Coactivation of muscles
More functional in the lower extremity*
Increased specificity of training
Term
Open Kinetic Chain Benifits:
Definition
Single joint movements
Improvements in ROM
PNF strengthening
Joint mobilization techniques
Isokineticexercise testing
