Straight in flat.
Definition
Used for straight ladders or extension ladders. The ladder is placed perpendicular to the building near the base with both spurs on the ground to achieve proper climbing angle when raised. The top of the ladder is raised flat to the building. For one person throws the foot is wedged into the base of the building, then raised into the building and the angle is adjusted.

Definition
Used when obstructions such as cars or overhead wires are encountered or if the space between buildings are limited. The ladder is placed parallel to the building and then raised perpendicular to the gorund. It is then pivoted 90 degrees and the ladder is lowered into the building

Straight in on the beam
Definition
This ladder throw is advantageous when obstructions are encountered. Usually only untilized for striaght ladders. The ladder is placed perpendicular to the building , the foot of the ladder placed near the base of the building on one beam.The top of the ladder is raised hand over hand on the beam until vertical. The foot person steps back while the head person steps in and foots the spur closest to the buildind. Then with a coordinated and smooth movement the ladder is placed into the building. Once the ladder is placed into the building the ladder is placed flat and the angle is adjusted.

Definition
Mostly used for fire escapes, the ladder is placed parallel to the building and then raised on it's beam. At vertical the head person foots the same spur the foot person is footing. The head person comes around first, then the foot person gets into place and the ladder is lowered into the building .

These ladders are normally used on the roof. They have hooks on the end to secure the ladder over the roof ridge. Scaler ladders utilized by the OFD are 12', 14', 16', 20' in lenghts. Engine compies carry 14' scalers.
