Term
How was the Atlantic Ocean formed?
Definition
Through the gradual break of the super continent, Pangea.
Term
How are oceans formed?
Definition
PANGEA!!

Oceans are formed through divergent boundaries. As lands shift away from each other because of plate tectonics, rift valleys are created which collect water forming oceans.
Term
Where's a good place to study plate tectonics?
Definition
ICELAND - right between the mid-Atlantic Ridge
Term
What happens between the margins of litsopheric plates?
Definition
land is either CREATED or DESTROYED
Term
What is the rate at which plates spread apart?
Definition
2.5 cm / year
Term
How is new land formed?
Definition
Divergent boundaries causes land to spread, magma from the earth's core comes UP, hardens when it reaches the surface forming new land.
Term
Where are new ocean basins being formed currently?
Definition
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, along the divergent plate boundary.
Term
With Iceland being on a divergent one with the Mid -Atlantic Ridge running through the middle, what are the possibilites that could happen?
Definition
One - Iceland will split into two

Two - materials will be deposited and it will stretch and get bigger
Term
What happens in a CONVERGENT ZONE?
Definition
Lithospheric plates are COMING TOGETHER
Term
What happens in a DIVERGENT ZONE?
Definition
Lithospheric plates are PULLING APART,
Term
Are oceanic or continental plates more dense? What happens when these two plates CONVERGE?
Definition
Oceanic plates are MORE DENSE than Continental plates. Continental plates are older and lighter (less dense) SO the oceanic plate SINKS.

This sinking is called a SUBDUCTION ZONE.
Term
How were the Andes Mountains Formed?
Definition
The Andes Mountains were created through a SUBDUCTION ZONE between the Nazca Continental Plate and the South American Oceanic Plate.

The Oceanic plate sunk below the Nazca and frictional forces pushed up magma forming the mountains.
Term
How are deep canyons (trenches formed?)
Definition
Through a subduction zone magma comes to the top forming mountains and trenches are created at the point of sinking.
Term
What is the Ring of Fire?
Definition
is thouands of miles of trenches in the South Pacific that was created through a oceanic - convergent subduction zones.
Term
Where are the world's most active volcanoes found?
Definition
In oceanic - convergence subduction zones
Term
Where is an example of an oceaninc to oceanic subduction zone?
Definition
Marianas Trench

Aletian Islands
Term
Where is the deepest point anywhere on Earth?
Definition
The Mariana Trench - it's about 11,033 meters deep.
Term
What happens during a continental - continental zone? where's an example of this?
Definition
the continental plates are light, so there is a SLIGHT push up.

Example would be the Himalayans.
Term
What kind of zone is the San Andreas Fault in California?
Definition
Neither a convergent or divergent zone, the plates are SLIDING PAST EACH OTHER.

this creates a transforming boundary.
Term
How are chains of islands formed?
Definition
Hotspots are stationary, lithospheric plates are moving, new land is created, land moves over millions of years and chains of islands are formed.
Term
In the Hawaiian islands, what direction is the plate moving?
Definition
North West
Term
Why are the islands that are farther away from the hotspot smaller?
Definition
Overtime, the land is eroded that slowly breaks them down to smaller sizes
Term
Where can an earthquake happen that is much stronger than the San Andreas Fault?
Definition
The Cascadia Subduction near Canada and Washington
Term
What's the average depth of the global ocean?
Definition
4,000 meters
Term
Which ocean is the deepest?
Definition
The Pacific
Term
Which ocean is the shallowest?
Definition
Artic Ocean
