Term
Broadband
Definition
General term for high-speed Internet service-generally 300 kbps and faster. In addition to their speed, broadband connections are distinguished from their dial-up  antencedents by the fact that each of these can be used simultaneously with phone service.
Term
DSL(Digital subsciber line)
Definition
Uses telephone line to deliver Internet service.
Term
ADSL (Asynchronous DSL)
Definition
Faster downloads than uploads
Term
SDSL (Synchronous DSL)
Definition
Provides identical speeds in either direction
Term
DSL Modem
Definition
Sends and recieves signals at different frequencies than the voice band uses. It also connects the computer to the DSL service and it typically connects through the computer's Ethernet port or a USB connection. DSL uses different frequency range, regular phones can interfere unless a seperate DSL line runs in.
Term
Cable
Definition
Cable Internet service's delivered through the same coaxial cable that provides a cable TV signal.
Term
Satellite
Definition
Satellite Internet service uses parabolic dish atennnas to send and recieve signals between geosynchrous satellites (approximately 22,000 miles (35,000 km) above Earth. They remain in the same location in the sky all the time.
Term
Satellite Modem
Definition
Connect the computer to the satellite dish through a USB or Ethernet port, similar to DSL or cable modems.
Term
Fiber
Definition

Not common, fiber's another alternative. Uses a dedicated line from the ISP to the business or residence, known as point-to-point (PTP) connection since it's not sshared with any other entity's established and it can be fiber to a neighbor boundary and coaxial cable from there or fiber all the way to a business or residence.

Term
Dial-up
Definition
Oldest, consumer-level technology for technology for connecting to the Internet. Uses an analog modem to connect over regular phone lines to an ISP. ISPs that provide dial-up access have several modems and dial-up numbers that their customer can access which are connected via high-speed network trunk lines to the internet. Not that very common anymore.
Term
Wireless
Definition
Ablity to connect to the Internet without being physically tied to a wall or an adapter.
Term
WEP(Wired Equivalent Privacy)
Definition
First encryption protocol for wireless networks. Uses 64- or 128-bit encryption keys. User only has access to 40 or 64 bits and it was often referred to as 40-bit WEP encryption
Term
WPA(Wi-Fi Protected Access)
Definition
Developed in part to address certain disadvantages WEP presents. WPA comes with 2 levels of security. WPA-uses TKIP encryption, and WPA2-uses AES encryption. WPA/WPA2 sipports key length up from 8-63 alphanumeric characters, including punctuation marks and character marks aren't permitted with WEP. Also allows RADIUS authentication server to be used in organizations.
Term
SSID (Service Set Identifier)
Definition
Name of the wireless access point's network, and all wireless networks must have an SSID.
Term
MAC filtering
Definition
Most wireless routers and WAPs allow users to specify the allowable MAC addresses so that only these devices may use the network. The MAC address can be used to block specific MAC addresses from accessing the network. The filters can block casual hackers from gaining access and it's possible to change the MAC Address because they're not encrypted, making them detected by network hacking software. So it's not a full security method.
Term
DCHP Settings
Definition
Virtually all WAPs and wireless routers are configured to act as DHCP servers.
Term
Bluetooth
Definition
Short-ranged wireless network technology designed to operate in PTP (Peer-to-Peer), or ad hoc, mode between computers, printers, smartphones, mice, and keyboards. Uses same 2.4 Ghz frequency used by IEEE 802.11 b/g/n networks, but minimizes interference by using sped-spectrum frequency-hopping signaling.
Term
Cellular
Definition
Same networks used for cellphone calls can be used for Internet access and remote networking, making mobile work and play even simpler.
Term
Celluar Modem
Definition
Data access plan is purchased from a carrier and it's needed to allow a mobile computer to use a cellular network for data access. They can be connected to USB ports or installed into slots.
