Term

The nervous system

Definition

Acts as the body's central command post.

Has two parts:

a. central nervous system

b. periferal nervous system

Term

Periferal Nervous System

Definition

All the parts of the nervous system except for the brain and the spinal cord.

Term

Central Nervous System

Definition

The brain and the spinal cord.

Term

neuron

Definition

a nerve cell that is specialized to receive and conduct electrical impulses.

Term

impulses

Definition

electrical messages.

Term

sensory neurons

Definition

neurons that gather information about what is happening in and around you body.

Term

motor neurons

Definition

neurons that send impulses from the brain and spinal cord to other systems.

Term

nerve

Definition

a collection of nerve fibers (axons) through which impulses travel between the central nervous system and other parts of the body.

Term

somatic nervous systems

Definition

neurons that stimulate skeletal muscles.

Term

autonomic nervous system

Definition

controls body functions that you don't think about, such as digestion and heart rate.

Has 2 divisions:

a. sympathetic nervous system

b. para-sympathetic nervous system

These 2 divisions maintain homeostasis (keeps your internal environment stable.)

Term

brain

Definition

the mass of nerve tissue that is the main control center of the nervous system.

Has two type of processes:

a. involuntary processes--digestion, heartbeat.

b. voluntary- moving and walking

Term

brain parts (3)

Definition

1. cerebrum

2. cerebellum

3. medulla

Term

cerebrum

Definition

Largest part of the brain. Where you think and store memories.

Controls voluntary movements and allos you to sense touch, light, sound, odors, taste, pain, heat and cold.

Term

parts of the cerebrum

Definition

1. left hemisfere- controls right side of the body and controls speaking, reading writing and solving problems.

2. right hemisfere - controls left side of the body and activities such as spatial thinking, processing music and interpreting emotions.

Term

cerebellum

Definition

Second largest part of the brain. Processes sensory information from your body such as skeletal muscles and joints.

Term

medulla

Definition

Part of the brain that connects to the spinal cord. Controls involuntary processes, such as blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and involuntary breathing.

You can't live without it.

Term

spinal cord

Definition

Carries information to and from the brain. Vertebrae protect the spinal cord. It is made of neurons and a bundle of axons that pass impulses to and from the brain.

Term

spinal cord injury

Definition

May block all information to and from the brain.
