Term

Binary Ionic Compound

Metal + Nonmetal

Definition

1st word: Original name of the metal

2nd word: nonmetal ending change to "ide"

Term

Pseudo-Binary Ionic Compound

 Metal + Nonmental

(One or both parts will be polyatomic ions)

Definition

1st word: Original name of metal or polyatomic cation

2nd word: Name of nonmetal with ending changed to "ide" or original name of polyatomic anion.

(Polyatomic ions do not change their names)

Term

Ternary Salts

Acidic Hydrogen Atoms are replaced with other cations

Definition

1st word: Original Name of metal or Polyatomic cation

2nd word:Name of polatomic anion derived from the ternary acid name

- if derived from an "ic" acid, change to "ate"

-if derived from "ous" acid, change to "ite"

Term

Ternary Acid Salts

Only some of acidic Hydrogen atoms are replaced with another cation

(named like Ternary Salts except with Hydrogen in the middle)

Has three parts

Definition

1st word: Original name of metal or polyatomic cation

2nd word: Hydrogen

3rd Word: Name of the polyatomic anion derived from ther ternary acid name

-If derived from an "ic", change to "ate"

-If derived from "ous", change to "ite"

Term

Covalent Binary Compounds

2 Different Nonmetals

Definition

1st word: Prefix added to nonmetal

2nd word: Nonmetal ending changed to "ide" and a number prefix added

1 mono,2 di, 3 tri, 4 tetra, 5 penta, 6 hexa, 7 hepta, 8 octa, 9 nona, 10 deca.

Term

Binary Acids

Contains H in the beginning

Definition

1st word: Name of element or polyatomic ion with "hydro" prefix and ending changed to "ic"

2nd word: the word "Acid"

Term

Ternary Acids

Contains Hydrogen at the beginning, a more electronegative element, and oxygen at the end

Definition

1st word: Derived from "ic" Acids

-If +1 more O atom, "per" prefix

-If -1 atom, "ic" ending changes to "ous"

If -2 atoms, "ic" ending changes to "ous" and "hypo" prefix

2nd word: the word "Acid"

(If any loss of O atoms, change ending to "ous")
