Term
What do semicircular canals respond to?
Definition
Head rotation (angular acceleration)
Term
What do the Utricle and Saccule respond to?
Definition
linear acceleration
Term
How do hair cells respond to stimulus?
Definition

They are composed of stereocilia and kinocilium which are lined up in graduated rows.

movement of the gelatinous matierial relative to the hair cell causes a deflection

Term
Deflection of the hair bundle toward the kinocilium elictis ______
Definition
Depolarization
Term
Deflection of the hair bundle away from the kinocilium  ______ the hair cell
Definition
Hyperpolarizes
Term
Why do you feel dizzy after you stop spinning around in a circle?
Definition
  • Upon original rightward head rotation the fluid moves to the left, depolarizing the cell (fluid moves towards the kinocillium).
  • The fluid catches up to the head and rotates at the same rate decreasing it's firing rate.
  • When you stop spinning and the head becomes stable the fluid is still moving away from the kinocillium, hyperpolarizing the cell resulting in SSC stimulation post rotation.
