  • A form of mosques originally made to mimic the Prophets mohammed's house in Medina. it's most prominent features are a courtyard usually surrounded by a covered "hypostyle" area.
  • Most used by the Ummayyad's and abbasssid
  • Ex: Great Mosque at Damascus, Cordorba Mosque.

  1. Four portals at aligned with the cross axis of plan opening onto central courtyard.
  • the biggest iwan usually symbolize the qibla wall
  • Iwans are also used for hospital's, schools, etc.
  • Ex: isfahan Friday mosque
