Term
What are the 3 major classes of Mollusks?
Definition
  1. Gastropoda
  2. Cephalopoda
  3. Bivalvia
Term

Identify the mollusc class for each picture below.

Definition

Pic 1 - (Snails) - Gastropoda

Pic 2 (Octopus) - Cephalopoda

Pic 3  (clam shell) - Bivalvia

Term

Give 2 examples of class Gastropoda.

Describe the purpose of shell.

Definition
  1. Snails
  2. Slugs

Purpose of Shell:

Protects against environment and snail can hide inside of shell and can seal in moistore.

Term

What is the operculum?

Definition

The operculum is a trapdoor that covers the foot and can seal the soft parts of the animal inside the shell safe from predators and seal moisture in.

Term
What are 3 characteristics of Molluscs?
Definition
  1. Shell - (made of calcium carbonate)
  2. Radula - (toothed tongue, used for feeding)
  3. Open Circulatory System - (Blood is in direct contact with organs)
Term
What are 2 examples and a 2 characteristics of class Bivalvia?
Definition

Two examples: clams and oysters

Characteristics:

  1. most are marine (salt water)
  2. filter feeders (water enters through gills and food is filter out)
Term

What class of molluscs is shown below?

Definition
Class Bivalvia
Term
Describe 3 functions (adaptations) of class Bivalves.
Definition
  1. Gills -  filter and collect food that the stomach digests
  2. Mantle - thin membrane lining outside of body and inside of shell
  3. Adductor muscles and hinge between shells - help close and seal two shells of a bivale (like a clam)
Term
Give 3 examples of class Cephalopods and give 4 characteristics.
Definition

3 Examples: Squid, Octopi, and Nautilus

4 Characteristics:

  1. cephalopod (means "head foot")
  2. closed circulatory system (like us)
  3. high cephalization (enlarged head, like us)
  4. complex and intelligent brain!
Term

Identify each example of class Cephalopods shown below.

Definition
  1. Squid
  2. Nautilus (shelled)
  3. Octupus
Term
According to one of your biology slides on Cepholopods, when do Cepholopods appear and which cepholopod appeared first?
Definition

According to ppt,

  1. Cephalopods appeard in late Cambrian Period, before fish
  2. Nautilus first, then Octupus, Squid, and Cuttlefish
Term
What is the one extra special "tricks" that the octupus can do?
Definition
Impersonate snakes, lions, and lionfish using their camaflage abililities.
Term
Describe 5 stages of an attack by a blue-ringed octopus.
Definition
  1. Painless bite
  2. Nausea
  3. Loss of Vision (within seconds you are blind)
  4. Loss of Touch, Speech, and Ability to Swallow
  5. Within 3 minutes, paralysis and respitory arrest
Term
