Cards

Term
Nondisjunction
Definition
Occurs when two homologous chromosomes fail to seperate during mitosis or meiosis.
Term
Point Mutation
Definition
a single base pairing is changed, such as thymine is switched for cytosine.
Term
Recombinant DNA
Definition

has DNA from two different genomes(genetically modified organisms)

example: when a bone marrow is given to someone with leukimia, the reciepient recieves the donor's DNA.

Term
Watson and Crick
Definition
Were given credit for the structure of DNA
Term

What is the DNA code for the following sequence?

methionine-leucine-tryptophan-glycine-valine

Definition

(there are mutliple possibilities)

TAC-GAA-ACC-CCA-CAC

or

TAC-GAC-ACC-CCC-CAT

Term
What are the three structural differencesbetween DNA and RNA?
Definition

1. Sugar in RNA cantains an extra hydroxyl group called ribose.

2. DNA has a nucleotide base thymine and RNA has the base Uracil.

3. RNA is single stranded

Term

Outline the steps of Transcription

Definition

Initiation: RNA polymerase binds to the sense strand on the DNA, this opens the double helix. Binds to a specific site on the DNA in front of the gene that is to be transcribed

Elongation: RNA polymerase starts building the single stranded mRNA. The mRNA is complementary to DNA template.

Termination: RNA polymerase reaches the end of the gene and recognizes this because of a termination sequence which gives the stop signal. mRNA detaches from DNA strand.

Term

List the following steps in order

1. spindel fibers contract

2. centrioles move to opposite poles

3. Chromosomes unwind into chromatin threads

4. nuclear membrane disolves

Definition

2, 4, 1, 3

Term

Outline the steps of Translation

Definition

Initiation: Ribosome binds to mRNA. The ribosome moves along the the mRNA reading the codons. Translation begins when the ribosome reaches the start codon.

Elongation: tRNA is responsible fro carrying the amino acids, one at a time. The tRNA carries methionine into the P site. second tRNA enters the A site. A peptide bond forms between methionine and the second amino acid. Ribosome moves over one codon and the next tRNA beings the next amino aacid into the A site. etc.

Term
Name two things the process mitosis is used for.
Definition
cell division and cloning
Term
State two parts of the cell theory.
Definition

1.All living organisms are made up of all cells

2. All cells come from pre-existing cells

3.All cells in an organism have the same DNA

4. Different cells have different life cycles
