Additional Biology Flashcards

Cards

Term
Cytokinesis
Definition
The division of cytoplasm and organelles
Term

DNA

Definition

deoxyribonucleic acid, responsible for processes of hereditary in all plants and animals.

Term

Chargalf's Rule

Definition

the percent of adenine is close to the percent of thymine, and the percent of cytosine is close to the percent of guanine.

Term
Karyotyping
Definition
an ordered display of chromosomes from largest to smallest and with the sex chromosomes last.
Term
What are the differences between somatic mutations and gametic mutations?
Definition

somatic mutations affect somatic cells and will not be passed on to offspring.

Gamatic mutations, however, affect sex cells and will be passed on to offspring.

Term
What are the three components of a nucleotide?
Definition
Phosphate group, sugar, nitrogen bases.
Term

Matching

1)Helicase

2)Primase

3)DNA polymerase

4)DNA ligase

a)get DNA ready for replication

b)splices together Okazaki fragments in the lagging strnad

c)unwinds segments of DNA, ahead of the replicaiton fork

d)adds new nucleotides to the 3' hydroxyl group of an existing nucleotide strand

Definition

1. c)

2. a)

3. d)

4. b)

Term

State at least two structural differences between DNA and RNA

Definition

1. sugar in RNA contains an extra hydroxyl group

2. DNA has the nucleotide base, thymine, RNA has the base uracil

3. RNA is single stranded, and DNA is double stranded

Term

Identify what kind of mutation it is, and whether the mutation is harmful or not. Explain your answer.

original strand: AUG AAC CCC ACA UAA

mutation       :  AUG AAC CCC ACU UAA

Definition

It's silent mutation, and it's not harmful to body, because this mutation does not result in a change in the amino acid coded for.

Term

If an organism has 50% of adenine and guanine in total, and there is 32% of cytosine. What is the percentage of thymine?

Definition

guanine = cytosine = 32%

adenine + guanine(32%) = 50%

   adenine = 18%

adenine = thymine = 18%

Therefore, the percentage of thymine is 18%
