Cards

Term
Environment
Definition

Every nongenetic influence, from prenatal nutrition to the people and things around us.

Our surroundings.

Coronado would be considered our enviornement because that is where I live.

Term
Chromosomes
Definition

Threadlike structurs made of DNA molecules that conatin genes.

The 23 pairs that make up our genetic makeup

Eery human has 23 chromosomes and if one is missing or something happens the offspring can be affected and have a syndrom.

Term
DNA
Definition

a complex molecule containging the genetic information that makes up chormosomes.

A molecule that is made up of Cytosine, Guanine, Thymine, and Adanine that determines our traits.

A DNA molecule strand that codes for different traits and is made of 4 different protiens and has a double helix with two opp. end 5' and 3'

Term
Genes
Definition

The biochemichecal units of heredity that make up the chromosomes; segments of DNA capable of synthesizing a protien.

All the DNA put together that makes us who we are physicaly and some can argue also mentaly.

We inherit our genes from our mom and dad and some are more dominant, some are co dominant and some are recesive.

Term
molecular genetics
Definition
the subfield of biology that studies the molecular structure and functions of genes
Term
heritability
Definition
the proportion of variation among individuals that we can attribute to genes. The heritability of a trait may var, depending on the range of populations and environments studied.
Term
interaction
Definition
the interplay that occurs when the effect of one factor(such as environment) depends on another factor(such as heredity)
Term
natural selection
Definition
the principle that, among the range of inherited trait variations, those contributing to increased reproduction and survival will most likely be passed on to succeeding generations.
Term
gender
Definition
in psychology, the biologically and socially influenced characteristics by which people define male and female
Term
Behavior Genetics
Definition

The study of the relative power and limits of genetic and enviormental influences on behavior.

How our surroundings and our gene makeup make us who we are.

Scientists who study this try to figure out which factor (genes or the envornment) play more of a role in who we are.

Term
gender(personal)
Definition
the sexual makeup a person is that can influence them socially
Term
natural selection(personal)
Definition
Darwin's idea that the certain traits that boost survival and reproduction will be passed on to future generations.
Term
interactions(personal)
Definition
the dependence of one factor upon another factor
Term
gender(example)
Definition
boys tend to feel they need to establish their dominance due to their testosterone
Term
epigenetics
Definition
The study of influences on gene expression that occur without a DNA change.
Term
evolutionary psychology
Definition
The study of the evaluation of behavior and the mind using principles of natural selection
Term
mutation
Definition
A random error in gene replication that leads to a change
Term
epigenetics (personal)
Definition
Past environmental experiences can effect your offspring
Term
evolutionary psycology (personal)
Definition
The study of how behavior has evolved and how our brains pick a mate based off of survival ability
Term
mutation (personal)
Definition
Something that gets screwed up in your genetic code and creates a deformity
Term
epigenetics (example)
Definition
If your grandmother fasted when she was young and your genetic code reflects on that
Term
evolutionary psychology (example)
Definition
Women are attracted to more muscular men because they have more chance of survival
Term
interaction(example)
Definition
the effect a cold environment has on a creature depends whether or not it inherited the proper traits needed to withstand it
Term
mutation (example)
Definition
Your genetic code is mixed up and you are born with 2 different colored eyes
Term
genome
Definition

the complete instructions for making an organism, consisting of all the genetic material in that organism's chromosomes

the genetic coding in chromosomes that tells a cell or organism to reproduce

the coding in cells that tell it to go through the stages of meiosis or mitosis

Term
identical twins
Definition

twins who develop from a single (monozygotic) fertilized egg that splits into two genetically identical organisms

a fertilized egg splitting into two fetuses with identical genetic information

Cassidy and Mackenzie Wiley, who look identical because they have identical genetic makeup

Term
fraternal twins
Definition

twins who develop from separate (dizygotic) fertilized eggs. They are genetically no closer than brothers or sisters, but they share a fetal environment

two fertilized eggs becoming fetuses in the womb at the same time but different genetic makeup

Tayler and Jordan Kastlunger, because they have different genetics than one another and do not appear identical

Term
temperament
Definition

a person's characteristic emotional reactivity and intensity

how emotional a person is on average

if a person is laid back, they have an easy-going temperament
