Definition
-Mitochondria. Threadlike structure inside of a cell that basically acts as a power generator for converting energy provided by food and energy that the body uses.
- Creates more than 90% of energy that the body needs to grow and survive. Helps the body perform everyday activities.
-Mitochondrial disease is when the mitochondria fails, meaning less energy is made in the cell, which results in cell injury and organ failure
Term
Definition
-Almost 4,000 children born with it.
-some dont show symptoms until they become an adult
-some diseases of aging are defects of Mitochondrial disease including Alzheimer's, cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
Term
Definition
-Over 40 different types of Mitochondrial Disease.
-Symptoms depend on which cells are affected

A mother of two from Escondido, California said that her firstborn appeared perfectly normal until he was 15 months old. They noticed that he had trouble focusing, and then they noticed developmental issues. By the time he was two he was in a wheelchair. Her second borns condition was noticed a bit sooner. -member of oversight commitee says that
-"this problem is made worse because you cant officially die of mitochondrial disease in the U.S even though, in actuality, you did as a result of the disease
Term
Definition
Researchers and doctors are trying to get as much knowledge as possible on this disease.
Although they havent officially found a cure, they are definetly on there way
Term
Definition
-this issue matters because parents are worried that their children could develop the disease and they want to prevent that from happening
-If we dont find a cure or prevention, children and adults will continue to die.
-affects my future because i dont want my children to develop the disease. i dont want it to pass on generation to generation.
-Relation to class. video. and weve been learning about cells and energy
