Cards

Term
Protons
Definition
In nucleus-- has positive charge
Term
Neutrons
Definition
In nucleus with protons. Have neutral charge.
Term
Electrons
Definition
Orbit around nucleus. Have negative charge.
Term
Atomic Number
Definition
Number of Protons
Term
Mass Number
Definition
Number of protons+number of neutrons
Term
pH
Definition
Acidity range from 1-14. 1 being extremely basic, 7 being neutral, and 14 being the most acidic.
Term
Enzyme
Definition

Enzymes increase the rate of which chemical reactions occur.

This is a substrate complex/lock and key hypothesis as well. When the substrate and enzyme bind the enzyme goes through a conformational change. Then two products emerge.

Term
Trophic Levels (Producer)
Definition
A plant! The first level that gets energy directly from the sun.
Term
First level consumer
Definition
An herbivore! Animals that eat the producers (plants).
Term
Second layer consumer!
Definition
Carnivore! The animals that eat the herbivores!
Term
Tertiary consumer~
Definition
Carnivores that eat other carnivores!
Term
The WATER CYCLE!!
Definition

Evaporation- liquid water turns into gas and goes into the sky as it warms

Transpiration- similar to evaporation. Water that was in plants comes out of them in the form of water vapor.

Condensation- turning of liquid water into gas. As warm air rises it cools, condensing to form cloud droplets (clouds are produced)

Precipitation- occurs when cloud particles become to heavy to stay in the air and come down to Earth-- cooling and becoming liquid.

Runoff-flowing of rain water to large water sources.

Term
Abiotic Facotrs
Definition
A nonliving thing (rock, soil, water)
Term
Biotic Factors
Definition
Living things (tree, fox, grass)
Term
Autotrophs
Definition
Producers! Plants mostly!
Term
Heterotrophs!
Definition
Consumers!! Everything that consumes the producers!
Term
Tundra!!
Definition

Animals: Arctic fox, snowy owl, grizzly bear

Climate: Treeless, cold throughout year, snowy

Location: Arctic (Canada, Alaska, etc.)

Plants: Arctic willow, arctic moss

Term
Taiga
Definition

Animals: Blackbear, bobcat, bald eagle

Plants: Balsam fir, black spruce, douglas fir

Location: Arctic (less arctic than tundra)

Climate: Cold all year long and snowy
