Term
ocular lens(eyepiece)
Definition
contains a lens that magnifies about 10x
Term
low-power objective lens
Definition
magnifies about 4x
Term
high-power objective lens
Definition
magnifies about 40x
Term
stage(body tube)
Definition
separates the eyepiece lens from the objective lens
Term
coarse adjustment knob
Definition
moves the stage for focusing with the low-power objective lens
Term
fine adjustment knob
Definition
moves the stage for focusing with the high-power objective lens
Term
stage
Definition
supports the slide being used
Term
stage clips
Definition
holds the slide in place
Term
diaphragm
Definition
controls the amount of light passing through the opening in the stage
Term
light
Definition
provides a light source to view the slide
Term
arm
Definition
supports the body tube & stage
Term
base
Definition
supports the microscope
Term
revolving nosepiece
Definition
holds the objectives and can be turned to change from one magnification to another
Term
compound light microsscope
Definition
a microscope that uses light to magnify small objects so that they can be seen easily by using lenses and produce a flat image
Term
transmission electron microscope
Definition
a microscope that sends a beam of electrons through a specimen to produce a flat image (cannot view living things)
Term
scanning electron microscope
Definition
a microscope that sends a beam of electrons at a specimen, which bounce off and produce a 3-D image
Term
wet mount slide instructions
Definition
1. Gather materials (slide, coverslip, water or liquid)
2. Place a drop of water or liquid on the center of a clean slide
3. Place the specimen in the water (can switch with step two if needed)
4. Place coverslip at an angle on the edge of the water and "drop" over specimen
5. Observe, be careful not to get fingerprints on it
Term
total magnification formula
Definition
ocular lens/eyepiece * objective lens
Term
magnification vs. resolution
Definition
magnification: the amount of times an object is enlarged
resolution: clarity of an image
Term
how to focus microscope
Definition
1. Make sure low power objective lens is over viewing area
2. Turn on light
3. Place slide under the stage clips
4. Use coarse adjustment knob to focus on specimen. Adjust the diaphragm to get a good lighting.
5. Use the fine adjustment knob to "fine tune" the image. Do not turn it too much.
6. Move to other powers/objective lens
7. If you lose the image, go to low power and find it, and then repeat the steps.
Term
how to carry and put away microscope
Definition
1. Carry it by the arm and base
2. ALWAYS keep it on a flat surface and away from the edge of the table
3. Shut off the light when microscope is not in use.
4. Notify a teacher or adult if a slide breaks or if the microscope doesn't work.
5. When finished, put the objective lens on low power, remove and clean the slide, wrap the cord around the microscope, and put it away.
Term
how does an image appear under the microscope
Definition
(refer to e lab) it is upside down and backwards. When moved, it appears to move in the opposite direction (ex. up=down, down=up, right=left, left=right)
