What are the four groups of protozoa based on locomotion?
Definition
  • Mastigophora (flagellates) - flagella
  • Sarcodina (ameoba) - pseudopods (false feet)
  • Ciliata (Ciliates) - small hair-like cilia
  • Sporozoa (Sporozoan) - parasites, complex life cycles.

What are the chararacteristics of Plasmodium vivax?
Definition
  • Infects RBC
  • Disease malaria - flu like symptoms - fever, chills, headaches
  • aka Blackwater Fever
  • Sporozoa type
  • Caused by carrier Anopheles mosquito in tropics
  • Anemic / Sickle Cell genetics are resistant to infection.

What are the characteristics of Trichomonas vaginalis?
Definition
  • Disease STD - greenish discharge, painful, itchy in woman, men are asymptomatic.
  • Infection of genitals
  • Mastigophor type
  • Transmitted thu sexual intercourse

What are the characteristics of Giardia lamblia?
Definition
  • Disease giardiasis - diarrhea, cramps, nausea
  • Infects intestines
  • Asymptomatic carries exist
  • Transmitted through contaminated food or water.
  • Mastigophora type
  • Two forms trophozoite and cyst
  • Cyst are hardy infectious form that can live in water for months
  • Two Trophozoites are produced by excystation which is binary fission of one cyst.
  • Diagnosis is through direct mount of feces sample, may require multiple because of limited MOs.
  • Boiling is required to breakdown hardy cyst form.

What are the characteristics of Trypanosoma brucei?
Definition
  • Chaga's disease 
  • aka African sleeping sickness
  • Reduvild "kissing" bugs deposit infected feces on skin at night -  scratch, rub into cuts
  • Mastigophora type
  • Typical in Central and South America
  • Low income and infants
  • Two stages:
    • Acute - Romana sign - swelling of eye or face
    • Chronic - Cardiac problems

Definition
  • Disease toxoplasmosis - very few symptoms
  • Suseptable patients - weakened IS, pregnant (tranmitted to fetus)
  • Lives in soil, contaminated fomites
  • Transmitted thru direct contact, transplants, transmission, raw meat, cat feces
  • Sporoza type
  • Nonmotile, OIP
