Term
What are the two general types of Acquired immunity?
Definition
  1. Active - our body is doing something
  2. Passive - we are given something (body is a receiver)
Term
What are the two types of Active and Passive aquired immunity?
Definition
  1. Natural
  2. Artificial
Term
What are the three characteristics of Active aquired immunity that natural and artificial have in common?
Definition
  1. They are active: body makes own Abs/Immune cells
  2. Develops at 10-14 days
  3. Long-lasting
Term
What is active natural aquired immunity?
Definition

It is the secondary and additional responses after the first infection of an Ag. Memory T and B cells are acquired immunity.

Term
What is artificial active acquired immunity?
Definition
  1. Vaccine - whole cell or subunit killed or live virus
  2. Toxoid - modified exotoxin that is nontoxic but antigenetic.
Term
What are the three characteristics of an effective immunization?
Definition
  1. Nontoxic
  2. Antigenetic
  3. Stable (unchanging Ag)
Term
What are the two types of vaccines?
Definition
  1. Whole cell - killed viruses or live (antenuated - weakened)
  2. Subunits - parts of cells i.e. DTap (acellular)
Term
What are the two types of virus changes that can affect stability?
Definition
  1. Viruses can change Ags (HIV)
  2. Viruses can change strains (Flu)
Term
What are the three characteristics of Passive natural and artificial acquired immunity they have in common?
Definition
  1. Passive - receive pre-formed Abs
  2. Immediate protection
  3. Short-lived
Term
What are the two characteristics of passive natural acquired immunity?
Definition
  1. Pre-formed Abs transfer across the placenta. Mom's (IgG) transfers to fetus.
  2. Pre-formed Abs (IgA) transfer through clostrum )mother's milke to newborn which helps coats GI because normal flora is undeveloped.
Term
What is unique about passive artificial acquired immunity and what are some examples?
Definition
  • Received through injections of Abs
  • Hepatitis A exposure  is treated with gammaglobulin (nonspecific IS booster)
  • Rabies and Tetanus are treated with specific Ab immunoglobins.
