Cards

Term
Lip Epithelium and glands
Definition

Stratified Squamous

Mucus (inside) & Sebacous (outside)

Term
Tongue- Intrinsic muscles vs. Extrinsic
Definition
Intrinsic is Responsible for changing shape but extrinsic is responsible for movement
Term
Lingual Papillae
Definition
Filliform, Fungiform, Circumvallate, Foliate (not present in humans)
Term
Filliform
Definition

most numerous

Smallest

keratinized

NO taste buds

Term
fungiform
Definition

Red spots

non-keratinized

taste buds on dorsum

Term
Circumvallate
Definition

8-12

largest

non-keratinized

taste buds on sides

Term
Taste Buds recognize 5 tastes:
Definition
sweet, sour, bitter, salty and MSG (umami)
Term
4 Layers of GI tract and their contents
Definition

Mucosa- lining epithelium, Lamina propria, smooth                muscle

Submucosa- Meissner's plexus

Muscularis - Myenteric plexus

Adventitia - connective Tissue

Term
GI innervation- Enteric, has 2 plexus
Definition

main controller

Can function w/o vagus n.

Meissener's - motility of GI, gland secretions, and local blood flow

Myenteric - contraction and Peristalsis

Term
GI innervation - Autonomic
Definition

Parasympathetic - Vagus n., stimulates peristalsis and inhibits sphincters

Sympathetic - Splanchnic n, inhibits peristalsis and activates sphincters

Term
Esophagus - epithelium and whats significant?
Definition

Stratified Squamous epithelium

Transition from skeletal to smooth muscle in middle third

Term
Barrett's Esophagus
Definition

abnormal growth of simple columnar cells in esophagus.

can lead to adenocarcinoma

Term
Stomach - 4 regions, epithelium, function
Definition

Cardia, Fundus, Body, Pylorus

Simple Columnar

ingested food is degraded by HCl and pepsin

Term
What is Ruga?
Definition
longitudinal folds of gastric mucosa and submucosa in resting or empty stomach
Term

Gastric Glands contain what kind of cells in the:

pit, isthmus, neck and base? and what do they secrete?

Definition

Pit

- surface lining cell = Visible mucus that is thick to protect stomach

- Regenerative Cell = highly mitotic

Isthmus

- mucus neck cell = soluble mucus to lubricate food

Neck

- Parietal cell = secrete HCl and intrinsic factor.  HCl is stimulated by Gastrin, Histamine, and Parasympathetic.  HCl is inhibited by Somatostatin, prostaglandin, and GIP

Base

- Chief cell = pepsinogen, contains zymogen granules

- Endocrine cell = G cels secrete gastrin

Term

Peptic Ulcer disease: what is it?

what is it caused from

Definition

inflammatory lesions in mucosal lining

from an increase in HCl secreted from Parietal cells

caused from H. Pylori or NSAIDs
