Clostridum botulinum
Definition
spore forming, G+, rod, Obligate anaerobe

Lives in soil and canned food.

Causes botulism in wounds (dirty), infants(honey), or doesn't need to be present.

How do you find it? look for botulism toxin in poo, vomit or blood. test the food. DO NOT CULTURE.

Incubation 1 day

How to Fix it? treat with antitoxin or get out of stomach.

Toxin details- heat liabile. stops atch release.

spore forming G+, rod, Obligate anaerobe TERMINAL SPORES

Lives in soil

Causes tetanus in wounds.

How do you find it? lock jaw. often not found in culter.

Incubation 4-7 days

How to Fix it? treat with IGg for tetanus toxin, penicillin and clean wound. Immunize.

How to Keep it from happening. DPT at 1 yo and booster at 5 and every ten years.

Toxin details- ant horn cells, stops gaba release.

Lives in G.I. Tract

Causes pseudomembranous colitis (ab associated diarrhea).

How do you find it? HPI(ab?, diarrhea with yellow and white plaques), exotoxin B in poop, ELISA for toxin, stool culture, scope.

How to Fix it? Vancomycin or metronidazole

How to Keep it from happening. use right ab

Toxin details- two types A and B. B causes pseudomembrane

Causes gangrene, cellulitis, fasciitis, myosiitis, septic abortion.

How do you find it? Crepitus, discoloration and pain, G stain fluid, culture, Xray for gas pockets.

How to Fix it? Sugery, penicillin, hyperbaric oxygen chamber

Toxin details- alpa toxin (lecithinase), collagenase, hyaluronidase
