Term
Meiosis
Definition
The process by which the number of chromosomes is reduced by half to form sex cells- sperm and eggs.
Term
What are the male sex cells?
Definition
Sperm cells
Term
What are the female sex cells?
Definition
Egg cells
Term
What does the chromosome theory of inheritance say?
Definition
Genes are carried from parents to their offspring on chromosomes.
Term
Before Meiosis
Definition
Every chromosome in the parent cell is copied. Cromatids are held together by centromeres.
Term
Meiosis 1
Definition
The chromosome pairs separate and are distributed to two different cells.
Term
Meiosis 2
Definition
The centromeres that hold the chromosomes together split and the chromatids separate. Single chromosomes move to the opposite ends of the cell.
Term
What are the results of Meiosis?
Definition
Four sex cells are produced. Each cell has half the number of chromosomes that the parent cell had in the beginning.
Term
If each sex cell has 23 chromosomes, but humans have 46 chromosomes, where do the other 23 chromosomes come from?
Definition
Each parent contributes 23 chromosomes to the offspring. So each offspring will receive 23 from the sperm cell and 23 from the egg cell.
Term
How are chromosomes and genes related?
Definition
Chromosomes are made up of many genes joined together.
