Keppra 

(levetiracetam)

Definition

class: anticonvulsant


use: treatment of seizures in children & adults


dose: immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets, IV


indications: do not crush or chew, caution in elderly because of risk for renal impairment, 


side effects: confusion, abdominal pain, bronchitis, neck pain, neutropenia, N&V, diplopia

Zestril

(lisinopril)

Definition

class: ACE inhibitor


use: hypertension, congestive heart failure


dose: tablets - 10mg once daily (hypertension) 5mg once daily (CHF)


indications: do not use if pregnant, do not use in patients with kidney disease, do not use if family history of angioedema, take baseline labs before administration (BUN, BS, Na, ECG, Creatinine, K)


side effects: chest pain, dizziness, headache, hypotension, fatigue, diarrhea, PVCs, URTI

Flexeril

(cyclobenzaprine)

Definition

class: skeletal muscle relaxant


use: treats skeletal muscle conditions such as pain or injury


dose: extended release capsules - 15mg once daily, tablets - 5mg three times daily


indications: do not use if you have a heart rhythm disorder, congestive heart failure, heart block, overactive thyroid. do not use with tramadol because it increases risk for seizures.


side effects: drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, constipation, headache, dyspepsia, unpleasant taste, fatigue

Reglan 

(metaclopramide)

 

Definition

class: Antidopaminergic, GI stimulant


use: used short term to treat heartburn caused by GERD


dose: gastroesophageal reflux - 10mg to 15mg PO four times a day (30 minutes before meal and at bedtime) ; IM or IV

10 mg, administer IV over 1 to 2 min.


indications: treatment with metoclopramide can cause tardive dyskinesia, do not use for longer than 12 weeks at a time, inspect color of reglan because it is light sensitive, give 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime


side effects: drowsiness, headache, insomnia, n&v, increased urination, changed menstrual period, breast swelling / tenderness

Flagyl

(metronidazole)

Definition

class: antibiotic


use: treats / fights infection


dose: varies depending on what is being treated


indication: do not use during first trimester of pregnancy, do not use without checking with doctor about certain conditions (liver disease, seizure disorder, anemia) do not use while breastfeeding


side effects: diziness, vaginal itching or discharge, metallic taste in mouth, swollen or sore tongue

Diflucan

(flucanazole)

Definition

class: antifungal antibiotic


use: treats infections caused by fungus


dose: varies depending on what is being treated


indication: lots of drug interactions, do not take more than one dose if pregnant, do not use while breastfeeding, check with doctor if any of these conditions exsist; liver or kidney disease, or heart rhythm disorder.


side effects: mild stomach pain, diarrhea, upset stomach, headache, dizziness, unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth

Prilosec

(omeprazole)

Definition

class: proton pump inhibitor


use: treats symptoms of GERD


dose: gastric ulcer - 40mg once daily 4-8 weeks, GERD 20mg once daily 4-8 weeks, H. Pylori used in triple therapy


indication: prilosec OTC shouldn't be taken more than 14 days in a row, do not use if you have; bloody or black stools,  heartburn with wheezing, coffee ground vomit, osteoperosis


side effects: fever, cold symptoms, stomach pain, N&V, headache

Synthroid

(levothyroxine sodium)

Definition

class: thyroid hormone


use: heps to treat hypothyroidism


dose


indication: may cause osteoperoisis over long period of time, tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions; anemia, thyroidtoxosis, diabetes, coronary artery disease, untreated adrenal gland disorder


side effects: hair loss, female problems getting pregnant

Zocor

(simvastatin)

Definition

class: HMG CoA rectase inhibitors


use: zocor is used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood


dose: usual dosage is 5 - 40mg a day


indications: myopathy may occur while taking zocor, check with doctor if you have any of the following disorders; kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, history of thyroid problems. avoid grapefruit while taking zocor, as it could have potiental negative interactions.


side effects: headache, mild muscle pain, constipation, mild skin rash, cold symptoms

Wellbutrin

(bupropion)

Definition

class: antidepressant


use: Wellbutrin is used to treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder


dose: major depressive disorder - 300mg once a day in the morning, beginning at 150mg, SAD - 150mg once a day in the morning. if increased up to 300mg, taper downduring last twoweeks of treatment


indications: do not crush or chew, avoid alcohol while taking wellbutrin, do not use if you have the following; seizure disorder, eating disorder, have suddenly stopped drinking alcohol or taking an antiseizure medication 


side effects: dry mouth, nausea, stomach pain, decreased interest in sex, dizziness, headache, changes in appetite, sore throat, muscle pain
