The contraction of the heart (systolic) and the relaxation of the heart (diastolic) are the components of blood pressure. The squeezing effect of tamponade limits the heartbeat and narrows the difference between the systolic and diastolic pressures. A pulse pressure of 10 or less is deadly. In an emergency, a doctor will stab a needle into the chest of a patient with cardiac tamponade and draw the fluid out of the pericardial space. If time permits, surgery called a pericardial window may be performed.

when the walls of the aorta weaken and the vessel starts to bulge, much like a balloon filled with air. The patient may be asymptomatic (show no signs or symptoms). This is a life-threatening condition, because the vessel may burst at any moment, denying the body oxygenated blood.
