Definition
A drug that opposes the action of histamine. Although there are two classes of histamine-blocking drugs, the term histamine is typically used to describe the agents that block the action of histamines on the H1 receptors. These agents are used to treat allergies, hives, etc.

Definition
In cases in which the patent on a specific pharmaceutical product expires and drug manufacturers produce generic versions of the original branded product, the generic version of the drug(which is theorized to be identical to the product manufactured by  different firm) is dispensed, even know the original product is prescribed. Some management care organizations and Medicaid programs mandate generic substitution because of the generally lower cost of generic drugs. There are state and federal regulations regarding generic substitution.
