Term
Colliculi
Definition
Colliculi coordinate visual and auditory reflexes. They get the eyes looking at a source of noise
Term
Trochlear nerve (Cranial nerve 4)
Definition
• Controls superior oblique muscles of the eye
• Turns the eye in its socket
• Purely motor function
Term
What happen when there’s damage to the trochlear nerve?
Definition
• The person can’t move their eyes downwards.
• Individuals have trouble going up and down stairs
Term
Occulomotor nerve (Cranial nerve 3)
Definition
• Controls muscles of the eye
• Keeps eyelids open
Term
What happens when there’s damage to the occulomotor nerve?
Definition
• Eyes move outwards “Wall eyed”
Term
Edinger-Westphal Nucleus
Definition
• Part of cranial nerve 3
• Controls the iris
Term
Substantia Nigra
Definition
• Darkly pigmented area that controls the initiation of motor movement
Term
Parkinson’s Disease
Definition
• Caused by the death of substantia nigra cells in 90% of Parkinson’s cases
• Individual will have a resting tremor
• Difficulty initiating and controlling movement until the individual has already initiated the movement
Term
What cranial nerves are located in the midbrain?
Definition
• Occulomotor nerve (CN 3)
• Trochlear Nerve (CN 4)
Term
Cerebral Peduncles
Definition
• Associated with corticospinal tract
• All axons from cerebral cortex must be bundled very tightly to fit in the cerebral peduncles
Term
Periaqueductal Grey
Definition
• Continuation of the reticular formation
• Lots of small unmyelinated neurons
• Largely associated with pleasure and habitual components of the forebrain
• Huge concentration of neuropeptides including endorphins and enkaphalins (associated with modulating pain)
• Also tied with learning and memory mechanisms
