Definition
They assumed that by settling on the frontier they could leave behind the economic chaos and flawed institutions and start over with a new social order and strong leadership that would produce a better society.

Definition
Because there were no treaties with the Native Americans, the settlers were physically threatened by them due to the violation of their rights. The men had to withdraw into their garrison, which stopped the expansion they need for their dream to be realized.

Definition
During the war it was seen as a refuge and as a place where soldiers would retreat to if they lost to the British. Because of that it was seen thereafter as a place of liberty and freedom.

Many were in poverty as they had not received pay or were paid in state securities that were not worth much.

Definition

How did Putnam think Congress should make a deal with Native Americans?
Definition
Because he felt that winning the loyalty of Native Americans would help in a potential war with England or Spain, he believed that Americans should trade with them. In exchange for furs, Native Americans could get necessities such as guns and wool blankets. Secondly, he wanted to establish forts (garrisons) that would encircle the Native Americans and cause them to give their allegiance or to leave their homelands.

What problems did the veterans face?
Definition
Veterans continued to be poor and to struggle with personal finances. They needed to find jobs and couldn’t wait a long time to find out the government’s plans. The certificates that they were paid were selling at low prices but could double if the government were to grant the Ohio lands.

Why was Congress slow to act?
Definition
They were still arguing about what powers it possessed to decide how land could be used. Until more states agreed to give up their land claims to Congress, there was little that could be done.
