Term
Cowper's glands
Definition

Also known as the bulbourethral glands, are located on either side of the urethra just below the prostate gland and their ducts open into the urethra. They secrete thick mucus acting as a lubricant.

Term
Epididymis
Definition

Tube at the upper part of each testis where sperm is temporarily stored.

Term
Gamete
Definition
Sex cell.
Term
Prostate gland
Definition

Lies under the bladder and surrounds the upper end of the urethra in the region where the vas deferens enters the urethra. The prostate gland secretes a thick fluid that, as part of the semen, aids the motility of the sperm.

Term

Scrotum

Definition

External sac that encloses and supports the testes. It is suspended from the pubic arch behind the penis and lies between the thighs.

Term
Semen
Definition

Ejaculatory fluid that contains sperm plus the secretions of the seminal vesicles, prostate gland and Cowper's glands.

Term
Seminal vesicles
Definition

Glands located at the base of the urinary bladder, opening into the vas deferens as it joins the urethra. They secrete a thick, yellow substance that nourishes the sperm cells and forms much of the volume of ejaculated semen. The ejaculatory duct in the seminal vesicles passes through the prostate gland and enters the urethra.

Term
Spermatozoa
Definition

Sperm are the male gametes. Sperm are manufactured by the seminiferous tubules within the testes.

Term
Testes
Definition

The testicles are two small egg-shaped glands that produce the spermatozoa (sperm) and testosterone (male sex hormone). This is the male gonad where the gametes are produced.

Term
Urethra
Definition

In the male, the urethra performs both a reproductive and urinary function. The urethra passes through the penis to the outside of the body.

Term
Vas deferens
Definition

Carries the sperm up into the pelvic region, around the urinary bladder, and then down toward the urethra.  At vasectomy, the vas deferens are ligated (tied), occluded (blocked) or fulgurated (sealed by electrical current).
