Cards Term First Person Definition A character in the story is tellnig what they observe and how they feel. Term Third-person objective Definition A person outside of the story is telling what is happening. Term Third-person limited Definition A narrator is inside the mind of one of the characters, he tells about the thoughts and feelings of that character. Term Omniscient Definition The person telling the story knows everything about ALL the characters, including their feelings and thoughts. Term Setting Definition When and where a story takes place. Setting can change. Term Conflict Definition The problem a character must solve. Term Internal Conflict Definition Character battles with their own feelings, thoughts, morals. Term External Conflict Definition Character must battle with others in some way. Term Person versus Person Definition Character battles against another Person. Term Person versus Society Definition Character battles views or actions of society. Term Person versus Beast Definition Character battles an animal or monster. Term Person versus Elements Definition Person versus nature: tornado, flood, blizzard, draught, earthquake... Term Person versus Fate Definition Character battles with their good luck or back luck (fate). Term Theme Definition Meaning of the story Term Theme Definition The meaning of the story requires a lot of thought and figuring out. Term Events Definition What happens to characters during the story. Facts, actions. Term Tone Definition The author's feelings about what they are writing. How the author says things. Term Mood Definition How readers feel when they read what the author wrote. Readers mood can change based on how the author says things. Term Simile Definition Compares two things using "like" or "as". "He is strong as a horse." "Float like a butterflfy, Sting like a bee." Term Metaphor Definition comparing two UNrelated things. Doesn't use "like" or "as". "The snow was a white blanket." Term Hyperbole Definition An exaggeration to show how extreme something is. "I have told you a MILLION times..." Term Alliteration Definition Two or more words used in a row that start with the same sound. ALLiteration means ALL the words start with the same sound. "perfect people paint pictures." Term Personification Definition Giving inanimate (nonliving) things human like characteristics. "The sun smiled down upon us." The sun can't smile, but it can make us smile. Term Onomatopoeia Definition Words that imitate sounds. Drip, plop, Ka-choo, Yawn, buzz...
