Term
Two main kinds of primates
Definition
1.Prosimians
2.Anthropoid
Term
Prosimians
Definition
(40 million years) -EX: Lemer
-smaller and less known herbivores (some insectivores)
-Nocturnal
-large eyes in relation to face
-more primitive primate
Term
Anthropoid
Definition
-Diurnal- active during the day
3 Types
*New World (30 million years)
*Old World-Costarrhines (25 million years)
*Hominides
Term
New World (Platyrrhines)
Definition
-flat nose
-prehensile tail: use as 5th appendage
-arboreal-live in trees (North A. & South A.)
EX: Howler Monkey & Squirrel Monkey
Term
Old World- Costarrhines (25 million years)
(TWO DIFFERENT KINDS)
Definition
-down turned nostrils
*Apes: Gorrilla, Orangatang, Gibon, Chimp (true social Organization)
*Hominiodes (4.4 million years)
Term
Hominides
Definition
ARE NOT APES BUT THEY ARE NOT “HUMANS”
-Australopithecus(3.6-1.4 millions years)
-Ardipithecus
Term
Australopithecus
5 TYPES
Definition
-Anemensis
-Africanus
-Robustus
-Boisei
-Afarensis
Term
Australopithecus
*FACTS*
Definition
(3.6-1.4 millions years)
-Bipedal-ALL THE TIME
- About 3 ft tall
- Some have smaller brains then apes
Term
Australopithecus Anemensis
Definition
-Bipedal
-May have lived at same time as Ardipithecus
-Most do not believe that Aridipithecus made Australoptihicus
Term
Australopithecus Africanus
Definition
-lots of variation within the species
-300 complete skeletons
-3ft tall with light bones
- Cranial Vault- 440 cc (Apes now 800 )
-skulls are much rounder (like humans)
-Pelvic bones are different
Term
Australopithecus Robustus
Definition
-Cranial Vault- 440 cc up to 550 cc
-thicker more massive bones
-Boney Crest (back of skull)=very strong jaw muscles
-Cheek pouches
Term
Australopithecus Boisei
Definition
- more massive bone structure
Term
Australopithecus Afarensis
Definition
-small and light frame
-walk upright
- “Lucy” 3ft tall full grown
Term
Homo
*FACTS*
Definition
(2-1.5 million years)
Does not appear Australopithecus gave birth to Home species
Homo with Australopithecus
Term
Homo Habilus
Definition
(human?)
-Cranial Vault-600 cc
-very primitive stone tools
-NO boney crest (bigger boney crest=bigger muscles)
-arm bones longer then proportion
Term
Homo
(5 differnt types)
Definition
-Habilus
-Rupolfensis
-Ergaster
-Erectus
-Sapiens
Term
Homo Rupolfensis
Homo Ergaster
Definition
Somewhat lager & Cranial Vault 750cc
Term
Homo Erectus
Definition
(1.6 million- 300,000 years)
-wipe out Ardipithecus
- 4-5 ft tall
-Very thick skull bones ( much thicker then present humans)
-Pronounce eye brow ridges
-Occipital crest
- large teeth & jaw strong neck muscles
- Cranial Vault 1000 cc (Modern Human 1300)
Term
Homo
(4 types)
Definition
lived with Homo Erectus
-Archaic
-Neanderthals
-Sapien-cromaganum
-Sapiens Modern
Term
Homo Erectus
(more facts)
Definition
-Very widespread different continents
-hunters & simple tools
-bones of large animals (hunted cooperatively)
-may have used fire -lived and died together(congregational)
Term
Homo Archaic
Definition
(400,000 -200,000)
-Cranial Vault 1300cc (same as present day humans)
Term
Homo Neanderthals
Definition
(150,000-35,000)
-fairly advanced tools
-buried their dead
Term
Homo Sapien-cromaganum
Definition
(34,000-14,000)
-tools that generate other tools
-high degree of sophistication
-records of life(cave paintings)
Term
Homo Sapiens Modern
Definition
(14,000)
-Humans today
-Have origins in Africa
Term
Two Theories
how they got around the world?
Definition
1. Candelabra- Homo Erectus left Africa each group evolved separately and one group could have been modern human(does not account for everything)
2. Noah’s Ark Model- One mass move out of Africa- small group (homo sapien sapien ) because they were so stable population entire planet came from this small group.
