Definition
Tissue destruction should not extend more than 2mm (or not more than one third of the tooth width) into the furcation

Class II
Definition
Cul-de-sac involvement. Tissue destruction extends deeper than 2mm (or more than one third of the tooth width) into the furcation but does not completely pass from one furcation opening (e.g. facial) to the next (e.g Lingual)

Class III
Definition
Through and through involvement. The tissue destruction extends throughout the entire length of the fucation, so that an instrument can be passed between the roots and emerge on teh other side of the tooth.

Definition
Through and through lesion with gingival recession, leading to a clearly visible furcation.
