Term
What is an enzyme?
Definition
A biological catalyst.
Term
What do enzymes do?
Definition
Accelerate the conversion of substrates to products by forming induced-fit enzyme substrate complexes which speed chemical reactions. They do this by lowering the activation energy.
Term
In the experiment, what was the enzyme, substrate, and products?
Definition
Enzyme: Catalase in Liver Extract (Catechol Oxidase)
Substrate: Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2)
Products: Water and Oxygen (Benzoquinone)
Term
How are enzymes effected?
Definition
1.) pH - 7
2.) temperature -
3.) substrates
4.) cofactors
Term
What is a catalyst?
Definition
Lowers the amount of energy necessary for a chemical rxn to occur.
Term
What is a substrate?
Definition
The substance being acted upon.
Term
Substrate + Enzyme = Enzyme-Substrate Complex -> Products + Enzyme
Definition
Ta-Da
Term
What does denaturation mean?
Definition
a structural change in macromolecules caused by extreme conditions
Term
what happened in our experiment when enzyme concentration increased?
Definition
The rate of reaction increased. As long as the enzyme does not outnumber the amount of substrate this will remain true.
Term
What happened when the pH was changed between 4, 7, 10?
Definition
The optimal pH is 7 so that is the pH where the reaction occurred the fastest.
Term
What happened with temperature?
Definition
The reaction occurred quickest at 37 C because that is closest to body temperature. Any lower or higher can denature it.
