Term
Attention
Definition
What your mind is focused on.
Term
Concentration
Definition
A person's ability to exert deliberate mental effort on what is most important in a given situation.
Term
Three types of focus
Definition
Attentional Selectivity: What are you thinking about? Examples include specific skills (dribbling a basketball), conscious to unconscious control and adrenaline, which can intensify focus levels.

Attentional Capacity: How long can you focus on it? Examples include processing limited information at one time. There's a finite amount of focus we can maintain per day. Stress drains it like a battery.

Attentional Alertness: Can you shift focus to different stimuli? The nervous system can process 110 bits per second, (one person speaking = 50 bits). Example includes tunnel vision, an increase in energy narrowing the field of vision. Different sports need different focus skills.
Term
Attentional Focus
Definition
· Width

· - Broad focus: must respond to multiple cues (point guard on fast break.)

· - Narrow focus: Respond to one or two cues (baseball hitter preparing to swing.)

· Direction

· - External Focus: focus on an outward object, (hockey puck.)

· - Internal focus: Focus on thoughts and feelings.
Term
Process Vs. Outcome
Definition
Process: Present-moment or in the moment thinking. Focusing on the current task at hand, going through process cues, (knees bent, smooth follow). Usually task (mastery) motivated people.

Outcome: Thinking about past moments or future possible outcomes. Undisciplined thoughts ("if I miss this shot, we will lose"). Can lead to failure under pressure.
Term
Choking
Definition
Player or team was strongly favored or had a big lead, and lost.
Term
Conscious Processing Hypothesis
Definition
Choking occurs when skilled performers focus too much attention on the task, as if they were a novice. Increases pressure/nerves.
Term
Being in the zone
Definition
The result of confidence, focus and intrinsic motivation. Being completely absorbed in the activity and being successful in autopilate. Like being in a meditative or hypnotic state, (in the moment). Loss of self-consciousness, slowing down time, (not thinking, just doing), effortless movement and clarity. Allows for peak performance.
Term
Flow theory
Definition
A quality of experience that is the feeling that one gets when one is doing the best at something that is difficult to do. Founded by Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.
Term
Preventing Flow
Definition
· Lack of confidence.

· Negative mindset.

· Distractions.

· Too much pressure.

· Unhappiness.

· Outcome Thoughts.
