Term
atom
Definition
the smallest particle (piece) of an element that still has all the properties of the element.  It is composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons
Term
Change of state (or phase change)
Definition
the changing of matter from a solid to a liquid, from a liquid to a gas, a gas back to a liquid, or a liquid back to a solid.
Term
Chemical change
Definition
the changing of matter into a different kind of matter with different properties.  The actual molecules change and a new substance is formed
Term
Compound
Definition
a combination of two or more elements held together by chemical bonds that can not be seperated by physical means; the joining of two or more kinds of atoms into a molecule by a chemical reaction
Term
Electron
Definition
a negatively charged particle moving around the nucleus of an atom
Term
Element
Definition
the basic building blocks of matter;  a substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance; each one is made up of the same kind of atoms
Term
Ductile (Ductility)
Definition
Able to be stretched thin into a wire;  (the property of metal that allows it to be stretched into a wire)
Term
Mass
Definition
the amount of matter in an object
Term
Matter
Definition
anything that has mass and occupies space
Term
Mixture
Definition
two or more substances that are mixed together but CAN be separated out because they are not chemically combined
Term
Molecule
Definition
the smallest particle of a substance that that retains the chemical and physical properties of the substance and is made from two or more atoms
Term
Neutron
Definition
a particle with no electrical charge in the nucleus (center) of an atom
Term
Nucleus
Definition
the center of an atom where the proton and neutrons are contained tightly packed together
Term
Physical change
Definition
a change in the properties of matter without forming a different kind of matter;  the look of the matter might change, but it still the same matter
Term
Proton
Definition
a positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom; The number of these in an atom gives an atom its atomic number
Term
Solution
Definition
a mixture in which a substance breaks up into its most basic particles and spreads evenly through another substance
Term
Bond
Definition
the force that holds atoms together to form a molecule
Term
Formula
Definition
a combination of symbols of elements that represent a compound;  for example NaCl is Sodium Chloride or salt
Term
Malleable
Definition
capable of being shaped by beating with a hammer or pressing; one of the properties of metals
Term
Conductive
Definition
able to transmit heat or electricity easily; one of the properties of metal
Term
Metals
Definition
one of the group of elements on the Periodic Table; these are malleable, ductile, and conductive.  (They can be shaped, stretched, and they conduct heat and electricity)
Term
Non-Metals
Definition
The elements on the Periodic Table that are brittle (not malleable or ductile), usually dull, and  NOT good conductors
Term
Subscript
Definition
The small number next to the symbol for an element that shows the nmber of atoms of that element is in a formula.  The 2 in H2O.
Term
Shells ( or energy levels)
Definition
the electron paths in an atom
