Term
Jaundice
Definition
Refers to yellow appearance of the skin, sclera and mucous membranes due to increased concentration of bilirubin in the blood.
Term
Alanine Amintotransferase
Definition
Liver enzyme that reflects damage to liver cell membranes. More specific than AST to liver.
Term
Asparagine Aminotransferase
Definition
Enzyme in high concentrations in the heart, liver and muscle that can reflects damage to liver cell membranes. Not very specific.
Term
Gamma Glutamyltranspeptidase
Definition
Enzyme found in blood produced by hepatocytes. Elevated levels indicate alcohol, heart or liver disease.
Term
Alkaline phosphatase
Definition
Present in bile canalicular membranes of hepatocytes, bile ducts and bone. Elevated levels indicate bone, liver or bile duct problem.
Term
Gilbert's syndrome
Definition
Common (2-7%) where there are nucleotide repeats in UDP-glucorunyl-transferase causing increased bilirubin levels that are asymptomatic and benign.
Term
Pre-hepatic jaundice
Definition
Increased bilirubin, normal liver function.
Term
Intrahepatic jaudice
Definition
Stools dark (unless severe then pale), maybe increased bilirubin, liver enzymes ALT & AST increased.
Term
Extrahepatic jaundice
Definition
Obstruction of large duct distal to bile canaliculi. Stools pale, urine dark and increased ALP and GGT
