- Black widow - severe immediate rxn

Definition
- Epipen - signs of severe rxn: hypotension, bronchoconstriction, smooth muscle contraction
**Hold needle in thigh for 10 seconds, may repeat

Definition
- deer tick - remove immediately: bull's eye rash, flu like sx
- Tx: doxy 100 or amoxicillin

Definition
From infected mosquitos - can result in meningitis

Insect repellant: duration based on strength. Can dissolve plastic
- 33% = 12 hour
- 20% = 4 hour

- picaridin - Another insect repellant - 7% in cutter advanced
- Permethrin - can use to treat clothes and tarps

What is poison ivy?
Definition
Toxicodendron - 85% allergic, 15% immune. Includes ivy, oak, and sumac
**10 days required to sensitize to new contact. First reaction may be mild, 2nd severe.
- Can last 1-3 weeks

What is urushiol oil?
Definition
The oil from poison ivy responsible for rxn - remains in smoke, on clothes/pets.
**Cannot get rash from exudate/vesicles

How can poison ivy be prevented?
Definition
- wash oil off immediately - 10 min of washing
- Wash clothes and tools
- Ivy block - before

How are poison ivy wounds treated?
Definition
- Astringent - aluminum, witch hazel, saline, acetic acid
- Rx steroid creams if vesicle forms
- Severe/life changing - oral steroids 30-60 mg for 3 weeks, then taper. 6 day pack not long enough
- Protectants: Calamine, caladryl, zinc
**Do not use: topical antihistamines, neomycin
