Nguyen Dynasty

 

Definition
  • b4 dynasty viet. ruled by three families one in the north, one in the middle, and one in the south (south was always uncontrollable and difficult)
  • this family took over but then pushed south to siam (burma) and became allies with french ppl and then sucessfully overthrew the other families
  • Nyguyen took over north and south in 1802
  • they followed the confucist ideals and chinese culture 
  • Difficult relationship with france
    • france thought they had an alliance with them but not the case
    • when they asked for trade treaty viet. said no
    • worried about west influence in the area viet try to separate but france really wanted them
    • next emperor burned books with christianity, kicked out missionaries but wanted trade to protect sugar producers
    • france always confused

        • 1858 spain and france work together in the city of danange capture it and spain backs off
      • 1867-68 fight so. viet take cochin china as a colony so they can send a fleet up mekong river to enter china in Yunnan but doesn't work
      • so they try red river which will work but tongking is choatic and will not let them and they execute catholic viet and missionaries
