Term
INTRUSIVE ROCKS
Definition
Rocks that cool slowely, producing large crystals, thus are coarse grained. These rocks are normally felsic. Includes rhyolite and granite.
Term
EXTRUSIVE ROCKS
Definition
These rocks cool fast, and have small crystals, thus having fine grains. These rocks are mafic and include basalt and gabbro.
Term
GRANITE
Definition
Felsic rock that is coarse grained. Minerals present are quartz, orthoclase, biotite, and sodium plagioclase.
Term

RHYOLITE

Definition
Felsic rock that is fine grained. Minerals present include quartz, orthoclase biotite, and sodium plagioclase.
Term
DIORITE
Definition
Intermediate rock that is coarse grained. Minerals present include sodium plagioclase, amphibole, pyroxene, and biotite.
Term
ANDESITE
Definition
Intermediate rock that is fine grained. Minerals present inlcude sodium plagioclase, amphibole, pyroxene, and biotite.
Term
GABBRO
Definition
Mafic rock that is coarse grained. Minerals present include calcium plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine
Term
BASALT
Definition
Mafic rock that is fine grained. Minerals present include calcium plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine.
Term
BOWENS REACTION SERIES
Definition
Table showing in what order minerals will crystalize as temperature decreases. Has a discontinuous side and a continuous side. Top is mafic and bottom is felsic
Term
WET/DRY MELTS
Definition
The type of melt depends on if water is present. water highers melting temperature causing rocks to melt further down, then crystalize before reaching surface. Dry melts are opposite.
Term

3 MAGMAS

Definition
Basaltic-low silica, dark

Adesitic- medium silica, greyish

Granatic- high silica, light
