Basic Trust vs. Mistrust
Definition

Erikson's theory, Infants that feel trusted will be able to explore the world.

 

Infants that feel mistrusted, will have trouble exploring and will withdraw themseleves from people and things around her.

Definition

When children recieven suitable guidence and reasonable choices from parents. 

 

If parents are uncontrolling or undercontrolling the child may have trouble controlling impulses.

Definition

Happiness, interest, surprise, fear, anger, sadness, and disgust. 

 

These emotions have been universal in primates and humans and promote our survival.

- When infants achieve new skills, they smile and laugh.

 

- Smileing binds the baby and mother into a warm supporting relationship. 

 

- In the early weeks, babies smile during REM sleep, in response to hearing mother's voice and touch.

 

- Social Smile - Occurs 6-10 weeks, from parents communication with the child. It appears to look like a broad grin.

- Rises during the second half of the first year. 

 

Infants experience Stranger Anxiety, infants become fearful when picked up by a stranger. If mother is around and the stranger acts warmly and playfull, usually the baby will be ok. 

 

Babies use parents as a Secure Base, which is who they go back to after they get a chance to explore. It leads to two conflicts approach and avoidence.

Definition

Begins 8-10 months, it is actively seeking information from a trusted person in an uncertain situation. 

 

Helps children move beyond reacting to other's emotional messages. They use those signal's learned from parents to guide thier own actions.

 

Ex. Reacting to broccoli and a cracker.

These include guilt, shame, embarressment, envy and pride. 

 

Toddlers show these emotions by lowering thier eyes, hanging thier heads and hiding thier faces.
