Photosynthesis

Definition

·      What is it?

A series of chemical reactions in which carbon dioxide and water are converted in the presence of light to carbohydrate (sugar) and oxygen

   6CO2 + 6H2O à C6H12O6 + 6O2

 List inputs and outputs

  Inputs: CO2  and H2O

   Outputs: C6H12O6 + O2

·      Where does it take place?

Chloroplasts: are organelles found in plant cells that conduct photosynthesis

·      Function of the sun?

o   Plants use the sun's energy to power chemical reactions that combine water with the air's carbon dioxide to form starchy carbohydrate à main source of plant nutrition

Term

Respiration

Definition

·      What is it?

Process by which stored organic materials (carbohydrate, protein, fat) are broken down into simple end products (CO2  and H2O) with a release of energy for plant growth and development

o   C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6 CO2 + 6 H2O

·      What types of cells, tissues, organs does respiration happen in?

Once oxygen and glucose are available, respiration can take place within any cell

§  Each cell contains one or more mitochondria à specially designed to convert the oxygen and glucose into energy.

Term

Transpiration

Definition

·      What is it?

The loss of water from the plant through the leaves in the vapor form

·      Where does it happen?

 Leaves

§  when stomata are open for the passage of CO2 and O2 during photosynthesis

·      What vascular tissue is involved

o   Xylem

·      What is the function of root hairs in this process?

Water passes from soil to root hairs through osmosis

Term

o   Oxygen (O)

o   Nitrogen (N)

o   Phosphorus (P)

o   Potassium (K)

o   Magnesium (Mg)

o   Calcium (Ca)

o   Sulfur (S)
